When we study the martial arts, we must be aware of our commitment to the principles and philosophy, not just the techniques that encompass them. Here at the MuSool Academy of Martial Arts, we study the martial disciplines of HapKiDo and TaeKwonDo as accurately and thoroughly as possible. To do this, we look to the theory of balance (Um-Yang in Korean). In any martial arts system, techniques consist of three major elements: movement, striking, and grappling. Any technique that you learn in the dojang must consist of one or more of these elements. For example, a punch, kick, or block can be categorized as a strike. Throws, joint locks, and chokes are grappling maneuvers. Footwork, dodging, and running are all examples of movement. The students of MuSool Academy of Martial Arts should strive to be balanced in their skill. They will practice techniques with both the left and right hands. Students will concentrate not only on striking, but on the grappling arts as well. This will ensure balanced technique. As students of the martial arts, we must learn to use techniques appropriate to the situation at hand. In addition to history, philosophy, and self-defense, many people like to utilize the martial arts as a competitive outlet. Students at MuSool Academy will have the option to compete in Olympic-style TaeKwonDo tournaments. They will train hard, and learn the values of competition, good will, and sportsmanship. Our symbol represents our philosophy of training in the martial arts. Based on those found on the South Korean flag, the kwae symbols represent four basic concepts of philosophy and instruction. Between the kwae rest the Korean characters for Hwarangdo. Hwarangdo can be translated as the way of flowering youth. The Hwarang were warriors from ancient Silla that focused on mental and martial development; they were masters of Tae kyon and Su bakpredecessors to modern Korean martial arts. Behind the kwae and hangul characters is the rising sun. The rising sun represents the continent of Asia, where our arts originated, and the dawning of a new day of hope and growth. When the meaning of this symbol is explained, it is easy to see that the philosophy of the MuSool Academy of Martial Arts is to create a positive, fun, and traditional martial arts environment for all people to achieve balance and harmony through training.
